NHS dental charges in Crewe
NHS dental charges in England are set by the government, not by the practice. You pay one charge for a complete course of treatment rather than a charge for each appointment.

The three bands
What each NHS charge band may include
NHS treatment is grouped into three bands. You pay one charge for the whole course of treatment, and if it spans more than one band you pay only the charge for the highest band that applies.

Urgent care
£27.90
A separate charge from the three treatment bands. It covers specified treatment needed to address an urgent dental problem.
- Examination, assessment and X-rays where required
- Temporary treatment, such as a dressing or one urgent filling
- Other necessary urgent care, which may include draining an abscess, refixing a crown or bridge, or removing up to two teeth
How the charges work
Four things worth knowing before you book
NHS charging works differently from paying privately, and these are the points people are most often surprised by.
One charge per course, not per visit
If your treatment takes three appointments, you pay one charge, not three. A course of treatment runs from the examination through to the completion of the treatment that was planned.
You pay the highest band only
If a course of treatment spans more than one band, you pay the charge for the highest band that applies. The bands are not added together, so a Band 3 course costs £332.10 rather than all three charges combined.
You are told the charge before treatment begins
The applicable NHS charge is explained to you before any treatment starts, so you know what you are agreeing to and can ask about it first.
NHS care covers what is clinically necessary
NHS treatment covers what is needed to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy. Treatment carried out purely to change the appearance of your teeth is not available under the NHS.
If you would prefer a treatment or material that is not clinically available to you under the NHS, for example teeth whitening or a particular cosmetic filling, a private option may be available where clinically suitable. We will explain which parts of a treatment plan are NHS and which are private before anything begins, and you are free to decline the private element. See our private fees.
Exemptions and extra charges
Free treatment and replacement-appliance charges
Some people are entitled to free NHS dental treatment or help with the cost. Separate charges may apply when a lost or broken NHS dental appliance needs to be replaced.
Common reasons treatment may be free
- Anyone under 18
- Under 19 and in qualifying full-time education
- Pregnant, or having had a baby in the previous 12 months
- Receiving certain qualifying benefits, or being named on a valid HC2 certificate
A valid HC3 certificate may provide partial help with NHS dental costs. You will be asked to confirm your entitlement at the appointment, so bring proof with you. Eligibility rules change, so check the current position on NHS.uk if you are unsure.
Replacing a lost or broken appliance
A separate charge of £99.60 per appliance normally applies when a lost or broken NHS denture, bridge or orthodontic appliance needs to be replaced. Two appliances cost £199.20.
If replacement is required because of normal wear and tear or because your clinical needs have changed, the usual Band 3 rules apply instead.
This charge is normally payable even if you qualify for free or reduced-cost NHS treatment. You may be able to claim a refund if paying caused undue financial hardship or if you took reasonable care of the appliance.
