What it is
What a dental implant is made of
An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. The replacement has three parts, fitted in stages.

The implant
A small post, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone where the root used to be. It is given a few months to bond with the bone before the tooth goes on.

The connector (abutment)
Joins the implant to the replacement tooth once the implant is ready.

A crown for one tooth, a bridge for several, or attachments that hold a removable denture in place.

Implants, bridges or dentures
Each way of replacing missing teeth has its own strengths. The right one for you depends on your priorities, your budget, and the position and number of teeth being replaced.

Who implants suit, and how we check
The consultation looks at your teeth and gums, the bone at the site and where the nerves and sinuses sit on a CBCT 3D scan (a detailed 3D X-ray of your jaw), your general health and medication, and whether you smoke, because smoking slows healing. Any decay or gum disease is treated first, so the implant starts in a healthy mouth.
Implants are worth considering if

- The teeth beside a gap are healthy and you would rather keep them that way
- Your denture moves when you eat or speak
- A tooth needs removing and you want to plan its replacement before it comes out
If there is less bone than the implant needs, a bone graft or a sinus lift can rebuild it; the fees are in the cost section below. Dr Patel will check implants suit you at the assessment, and results vary from person to person. If they are not the right fit, he will talk you through a bridge or a denture instead.
The process
What implant treatment involves
Treatment runs in stages over several months, so the implant has time to bond with the bone before the tooth goes on.

Consultation and scan
Dr Patel examines your teeth, gums and bite and reviews your medical history. If you decide to explore treatment, a CBCT 3D scan measures the bone.

Your written plan
You get a written plan with the stages, the cost and the alternatives. Like any surgery, implant treatment carries some risk. Your dentist goes through this with you at your consultation. Nothing starts until you have agreed it.

Preparing the site, if needed
Gum treatment, an extraction or a bone graft comes first for some people.

Placing the implant
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic and the implant is placed in the jawbone. You may have a few stitches while the gum heals.

Healing
The implant bonds with the bone over several months. If the gap shows, a temporary tooth can usually be arranged.

Fitting your replacement tooth
A scan or mould is taken and your crown, bridge or denture attachment is made and fitted.
Dr Patel gives you your own timeline at the planning stage, because healing depends on the site and the bone. Afterwards, daily cleaning, hygiene visits and your routine check-ups keep the implant and the gum around it healthy.

How much do dental implants cost in Ipswich?
A single implant with a crown starts at £2,500. Your implant consultation is currently £50 (usually £150). If you decide to explore treatment, the CBCT 3D scan is £150 (usually £200), and if you go ahead, £100 comes off your treatment cost. The total depends on how many teeth are being replaced, the type of replacement tooth and any treatment needed first, such as a bone graft.

What the single implant fee covers. The implant, the connector and the crown. Grafting, a sinus lift and the consultation are priced separately and only recommended if you need them. Implant treatment at our practice is private, and you get the full cost in writing before anything starts.

Can I have teeth fitted on the same day?
Sometimes, depending on the bone and the plan. A temporary tooth can often be arranged so you are not left with a gap, and your final tooth is fitted once the implant has bonded with the bone over the following months. Dr Patel will tell you which applies to you at the planning stage.
Is having an implant placed painful?
Local anaesthetic numbs the area, and you tell Dr Patel if anything hurts during treatment. Some soreness or swelling can follow and eases with everyday pain relief. If you are anxious about treatment, say so and ask what support is available.
How long will an implant last?
A dental implant is designed as a long-term replacement for a missing tooth. Daily cleaning, healthy gums, staying smoke-free and regular check-ups all help yours last.
Will I need a bone graft?
Not always. Dr Patel measures the bone on your scan and recommends a graft only if the implant needs more support. A simple bone graft is £500 and a complex graft £1,800–£2,800, on top of the implant fee, and a graft adds healing time before the implant goes in.
